puttin up reindeer and singin songs of joy and peace

on christmas morning, mom and jake and i went to help out at the soup kitchen. i had helped once when i was in high school, but never on christmas. there were a lot of volunteers, but i guess i thought there would be even more. i'm really bad with numbers but i would say there were maybe 300 that came to be served. i passed out desserts.

jake gave me a sign language magnetic poetry set. its pretty nifty. he said, i know you don't have a refrigerator but i figure this will encourage you to get one soon. meaning, it will encourage me to hurry up and get my own place. HA - only if i get a raise

unfortunately many of gifts were not surprises like the magnetic poetry set. i dig surprises. i don't make a christmas list but mom still makes me pick out most of what i'm getting from her.
we had opened all of our gifts and mom says, okay, that's it! but, i thought that i had something else coming. i let a few minutes go by and thought about it some more. i did have something else. i said, mom, are you sure that's everything??? HA. you know that's bad when you have to remind your mom that she is forgetting to give you one of your presents. but it was a very specific item that i had chosen and a fairly large item too. it was my easel. so mom was like, oh yeah its still in my room.

you're probably thinking - oh big deal, an easel. but, its great! and i've never had a real one before so i was excited.

in conclusion, it was the first year that the whole family wasn't together for christmas. there also wasn't that much under the tree as in previous years. mom made herself cut back a lot. but i think this has been one of the most relaxing and enjoyable christmases ever. a gift much needed.
